Thread: e30mclow's latest e30

  1. #1

    e30mclow's latest e30 -> Now going 1jz + 6 Speed

Carrying on from some posts in my S4 thread..
Picked up an e30 325i last night. It is rougher than a sailor's sac, but is a cheap means of having some fun.

    $1,500.

    Spec:

    • Rusty Scuttle
    • Rear Pocket (under the battery) has a fine big hole in it
    • Paint is bad
    • Sunroof tray is rusty
    • Interior needs to be disinfected
    • Every bushing is gone
    • Misfiring under load
    • Exhaust is swiss cheese
    • Sills and jacking points are solid
    • Arches are solid
    • Front panel is pretty straight
    • There is an oil leak of some sort
    • The sunroof visor covers previous hole repairs

I'm just interested in having something that I don't necessarily need to care too much about, and won't bust the bank if it breaks.
The thought of a solidly setup e30 with an LSD on a greasy road it what it is all about.

I had to sit on my hands last night to avoid going to town with the credit card before getting a clear picture of how bad the car might actually be.

    Plans:
Next 1-2 months (in order of priority)

    • Clinical Clean of the interior (seats out, steam clean, dead frog removal etc)
    • Full Engine Service (belts, fluids, plugs and ignition system)
    • New Exhaust
    • Full Polybush Bushing Kit
    • New Brakes & SS Hoses
    • Z3 1.9 Shifter and New Shifter Cup/Bushing
    • New iS Front Lip (or an MTech II Valance if I can find one)
    • Find an LSD somewhere
    • BC Racing Coilovers

    Long Term

    • Get my hoard from home shipped over
    • Safety Devices Half Cage
    • Schmidt Modernline 16x9J Wheels
    • e46 steering rack
    • Start making a go at painting it

    Done Deal Photo- MINT!!!

    Actual photos (not so mint)

    There's hope for it yet!

At least she doesn't have those awful US spec bumpers. Single exhaust exit is unusual in a sixer. Is that an airbag steering wheel? Standard ride height on an e30 is just comical isn't it!!

The other tail pipe is in the boot. It had rusted off!
That's the main reason I went for it, it not having the ugly US bumpers. Yes, they had airbags over here.

    Full Service Kit $460.00
    Misc Cleaning Items $75.00
    Exhaust $350.00

A sturdy front strut brace is a worthy addition too, especially with stiffened sussy

Very True. Garagistic do a ton of e30 specific bits & pieces, including a front & rear brace combo:

Excellent!!! I found out my car has an lsd on Saturday but the attached is the state of the planet and sun gears. It was bittersweet.

I can't wait to see how this project unfolds, the s4 has been a great read but you have a lot to live up to after that

Any plans for an engine swap?

    Bittersweet indeed!

I wouldn't mind putting an s54 in there, but don't think I'll be in the US long enough to pull it off.
Ripped into it tonight and started ordering parts.

    Surprisingly clean where e30s are usually rust. The only really bad spots are the roof, and this rear pocket;

    The other side is perfect

Clean battery tray & chassis legs

Interior removed for a serious clean

..during which I found a whole pile of service history back to the 90s.

Ordered a complete service kit, powerflex bushing kit and z3 short shifter & busing kit tonight.
The plugs are rotten and she could do with a good "tune up" as the yanks say.

From there I'll see if it is worth the $ for coilovers etc

    The plot thickens..
Looking at my last photo, it would suggest that the gears that turn the odometer have been worn out for at least the last 9 years lol.
Same mileage in 2008 as it had in 2013, as it has today.

    Better do the timing belt!

I thought when you said clean out dead frogs that you were using a metaphor!
