  • It is way more fun than that. The EU has lots of restrictions on developing new gas and oil exploration, preferring instead to import from Russia (and others). Ireland being a very good example. Germany is shutting down perfectly safe nuclear power plants in order to buy Russian gas.

€35 Billion was paid to Russia for oil and gas compared to €1 Billion given over to Ukraine.

There's also the issue that the Ukraine is still having to service its debt during all of this and with a devalued currency to boot.

        • Yeah I guess considering the size of the EU economies its probably about right,I wonder how much does Germany account for of that figure?

Angela Merkels policy decisions to close their nuclear power plants is looking pretty rash and stupid now.

That is pretty crazy but I guess the banks/institutions that own that debt are not in the business of letting countries off repaying their debts no matter what they are going through.

Ukraine is going to need an astonishing amount of funds to help rebuild their entire country basically.

                    • Very powerful videos there.

I can see the pressure only increasing on European countries to just stop buying Russian energy.

They bombed a train station in Donetsk this morning, usual drivel from Russia "it wasn't us"!!

                            • I've been saying this since the beginning. Each of this "Phases" of sanctions means 1000s of people displaced, murdered, etc. while they discuss when to put the next phase in place. Just put the maximum sanctions in place now, full stop.
I seen images of the train station today. Truly shocking and sad.

                              • I personally think the power of public opinion and internet cancel culture is having and will have much more impact than a set of sanctions that seem to mostly be designed to look like politicians are doing something. I have to assume that all (I think) western car and truck operations having ceased in Russia must have a significant impact over time as an example. I like the volunteers in Poland who are blocking trucks entering Belarus as well.
