  • How to get Disappeared, China Style

I don't know if anyone else has been following this peculiar story from China about one of their
biggest women tennis stars, Peng Shuai.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-59325399

A few weeks ago she put up a post online, alleging to have been sexually assaulted by a politician who
was China's Vice-Premier from 2013-2018, so he was only a step or two down the line from Xi Jingping.

The post was taken down and she hasn't been seen or heard of since.
Apart from an apparent email from her saying she had made a mistake and the allegations weren't true.

Its pretty obvious the Communist Party has tried to erase all of this and hope that no-one would notice.
Since Serena Williams and other big names have been drawing attention to the story, that obviously hasn't happened.

Unfortunately things like this tend to end up with said person committing suicide by shooting themselves twice in the back of the head with a rifle while asleep or similar.

Fair play to the WTA for standing up for her too. not climbing down like the NBA did a few years back when some player merely tweeted support to the hong kong protests.

Seemingly a third of their revenue comes from China, so this is a pretty strong statement to put out: https://www.wtatennis.com/news/23560...a-chairman-ceo

We revere our elders (Judges / GAA players / county council apparatchik's) down here in Kerry the same way too only difference is they don't have to go to the bother of making the complainant disappear its just never brought to court or if it is they are acquitted. Its put down to a ah sure it was only an innocent boy meets girl situation.

Nobody wants to offend the Chinese and suffer the potential revenue loss that it would bring so fair play for them for standing up. Things are about to get very tricky as it looks like the cold war between the West and China is beginning to get much colder. The US is talking publicly about not sending a diplomatic representative to the Olympics in Beijing now.

There's been a lot more activity and happenings in China over the last 2 months than just this poor girl.
She's not the only one to have disappeared or been lost to accidents. (For those who want to go looking).

It's always funny to see a country that has literally every square inch of ground covered by security cameras and stuff like this can happen and noone knows anything.

I had actually forgotten all about this case about Irishman Richard O'Halloran who has been held in China since February 2019 when he went to Shanghai to sort out a business dealing that had nothing to do with him

His story was in the papers here a few months ago but I'm guessing nothing has happened in his case since.

My mom mentioned the same thing about that, she was a circuit court clerk in limerick when she was younger.
