  • 2 Grand Appeared By Magic

Here’s one that’ll be interesting to get different people’s views on.

This evening I discovered that someone deposited €2,000 into my bank account yesterday by mistake.

The person who lodged the money bought something from me on DoneDeal a few months ago. Back then she paid me via 365 online at my door, straight into my account.

All the communication was via the DD app and she didn’t keep my number or doesn’t remember where I live.

    What would you do???

Edit: This is not me asking for asking for advice. I immediately transferred her money to her.

It was intended to get people to think what they would do in the same circumstance.

If you still have their number give them a ring and do the right thing. If you seen someone drop a wallet or knew someone who owned a wallet you found what would you do only two answers and chances are your going to be contacted by the bank anyway.

I'm a firm believer in Karma, paying it forward etc.
I'd definitely try contact her. Or ask the bank about it. I'd consider it "unlucky" money.

That is not a small amount of money for a lot of people so I would do everything you
can to contact there person and return the money.

If it was only €10 or something I would still try and give it back, for €2k definitely.
Plus the Karma Gods will be a lot happier with you

I know it’s nice to dream about it, but this isn’t a grey area. The money is not yours. You were given it by accident or mistake. Contact your bank and tell them what happened. They will be on to you in due course anyway once the person realizes what’s happened. Don’t spend it whatever you do. Plenty of cases of this happening in Irish courts, google them. Be very embarrassing / shameful thing to be in court for. Media love these type of stories.

Shocked the question was asked really!
Tell your bank and get the money back to her.

              Keep your knickers on boys.

I wasn’t asking for advice. I clearly asked “What would you do?”

I thought it might be interesting to see how different people would react in the situation.

Rather than getting some different views I just got hysterical outrage based on the assumption that I would be willing to defraud a young lady of €2k.

Just to ensure a lynch mob don’t arrive at my door what I actually did was to go through all my messages from about the right time and finally ound her number.

I called her, explained what happened. Once she got over the shock, I got her to send me her iban and had the money back to her 10 minutes later, which she then confirmed by text.

Furthermore, she wanted to drive the length of the m50 to drop off a thank you present but I told her there was no need, but if she wanted to do something she could make a small donation to Focus Ireland and hopefully pass the good luck on the someone who needs it.

But as I said, this thread wasn’t about looking for advice it was to get people to think what they would do themselves when faced with the same circumstance.

As one of my old teachers used to say the most important part of any exam is to RTFQ.

so the thread was to weed out some unscrupulous people, based on some poor assumptions , and now you are getting annoyed when people are insulted by those assumptions.

No, the thread was to see how different people would react. I though it might spark an interesting debate but obviously I was wrong.

I am more than certain that there are many, many people out there who'd say nothing to no one if this happened to them.

ok, well I think we have a fairly good crowd here. I can't speak for everyone but if there was anyone who would keep the money, I think its doubtful that they would say so on this thread.
But if they did, it would have been gold, I'll give ya that!

I'd have taken the money... changed my DNA by depol & run away leaving Mrs_XB & all the cars to an island somewhere to snort covid vax off a young girls ample bosom...

Based on how shocked the lady was to get my call, I agree 100%

                              It certainly would!

It reminded me of a guy I was in college with many, many years ago (late 90s) who withdrew a few hundred pounds in cash over the counter. However, the bank made a mistake and recorded it as a lodgement.

His view was that they could have it back when they asked for it, which never happened.
