  • Are they saying for us to go on holidays abroad or that would be possible to go on holidays abroad, there is a difference.

Remember pubs? Sometimes you can get a lesson in the School of Life in a pub that you'd never get anywhere else. So I was at a loose end early one Sunday afternoon and was having a couple of pints in the pubs on Waterloo St in Derry, where Peadar O'Donnells and The Gweedore Bar etc. are. And I wouldn't know the wider area well at all, being so far from Galway. All of a sudden about 40-60 Donegal lads came in with bags, on the way somewhere. So we get talking and it's basically a human caravan where the lads were home every second weekend and were headed back to Britain.

The buses from Donegal drop them in Foyle St., they have a few scoops in Derry and then it's over the river to the new bus/train station and off to Belfast for a flight to England or Scotland. The fellas I got talking to were all tradesmen and explained that areas of Donegal even had specialisations, I recall them saying that Carndonagh lads concentrated on plastering and I already knew that Arranmore lads were tunnelers. They mentioned a few other places which produced certain other specialisations but I have forgotten them. The lads reckoned that the origins of what they were doing went back as far as the Donegal 'tattie hokers' who travelled to Scotland seasonally to pick spuds but that it also might have had its origins in the Linen Industry where women had steady work in Derry and the surrounding areas well into the 1870s and men had to basically take what was available even if it meant seasonal or regular travel further afield.

I often think of that conversation, it was real-life social history and very educational. I knew Donegal folk could cover a lot of ground, due to the location of the county in the Republic many Donegal people have to travel to Galway for both education and healthcare and to this day the Feda O'Donnell buses line up in the Cathedral car park every Friday evening. I was in college with a brother and sister from Buncrana and they would head up and back every single weekend on the bus, I think that was 5hrs+ each way back then. Tis not easy.

So yeah it's easy to hate on Donegal but as I say it's a complex county in terms of people coming and going out of it for entirely valid reasons.

            Just not blocks themselves

Tongue in cheek of course. Gweedore lad plastered my house, quality work and some attention to detail.

It's a too-much neglected county. We need to do better by Donegal much more than the other way round.

Personally I am a big fan of it. Buncranna has been good to me.

                          • So my first AZ dose got today. Next dose 12 - 14 weeks they said. No date given as yet. So that's late July / early August. First dose makes you 70% protected after 2/3 weeks - second dose makes you 80% protected after another 2/3 weeks. So it might be early September before I am as protected as one can be from vaccinations.
