Woke up to hear the news Meatloaf has died last night.

In a lot of ways he was uncool or whatever but I always liked listening to his
songs, he had some absolutely cracking songs over the years.

I just heard someone text into a radio station that they went to see him play in a small nite club in the middle
of Cavan of all places back in the 70's, even though he was a pretty big star at that time.
Any footage I've seen of him on stage he was always giving it 110%.

He was also a really good actor, he was brilliant in Fight Club.
I'll have to go for a nice spin later on and stick on a few of his biggest songs....

He was a great actor for sure, I think theatrics defined the man, that was his whole thing in his music really.

Bat Out of Hell was such a weird album for the time. It's accepted in the Nova listening "Classic ROCK" canon now but it was really sort of uncool and overblown against the backdrop of 1977. I can't say it's my thing, but as a coherent, unique piece of work delivered with full on passion and showmanship, you have to respect it and that's why I think it worked despite being like turning up at a Sex Pistols concert in an REO Speedwagon T-Shirt

I mean all the cool kids were there all Punk/Post Punk/New Wave/Early Electronic, stripped down of anything seen as early 70s excess, everything delivered detached cool or a sneer - Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Pistols, Iggy Pop, Big Star, The Cars, Kraftwerk or lesser known stuff like Wire/Magazine/Suicide and here comes this big lad in a frilly shirt who is a total mess going all in on operatic epics (I don't think even qualifies as rock and roll, it just wears rock and rolls clothes). It shouldn't have worked, but it did and as good a writer as Jim Steinmann was, only Meat could have ever made it work.

I mean of course there was plenty of cheese around in 77, but a lot could be dismissed as being only cheese. Like the way Abba could cut through it and still be quietly respected (even if it took a while for us all to admit to each other we liked them unironically) because they had such an incredibly flair for melody, harmony and surprisingly dark lyrics at times, Meatloaf just punched through being boxed into the "cheesy" ghetto through sheer force of will.

I remember the amazing performance of 'Paradise by the dashboard light’ on the Old Grey Whistle Test with a young woman call Karla DeVito, it caused an outcry at the time as it wasn’t exactly PC. It was the first time I had heard of him. It’s well worth checking out the full version on YouTube, was very risqué for a live performance.

Jesus the 70's really were a lifetime ago watching that YouTube clip.
Can you imagine the uproar if that was put on tv now!!

He clearly put a lot of effort and time into the theatrics of his performances,I didnt know he was big into theatre and stage acting until I read it this morning.

The only thing I ever saw him in was Fight Club and some of his epic videos for his songs.
