  • Bolt extractor kits - what's good out there ?

Struggling with a particularly recalcitrant hex headed bolt. Have soaked the bl**dy thing in a couple of different penetrating compounds over the last few days, heated it, hammered it, and it aint going anywhere.

Don't really want to go down the weld a nut to it, heat to red-hot route yet because of what's around it - but fancy the look of these:

I like the idea of the cam-levered steel bars compressing onto the flats of the nut - and they seem to come well recommended on 'tnet.
Unfortunately they seem to be entirely unavailable anywhere.

Has anybody tried or used something similar they'd recommend (or heaven forbid, know where I can buy the Grip-Tite ones )?

i take it you've rounded the head? if its that seized chances are even with the kit, you'll snap the head off.

these are very good but again, will only work if the bolt is actually going to come out without snapping the head off

looking back now, I think that maybe, every now and again, I should have braked a little earlier

Would one use that to extract a wheel stud that's been mangled?

It's a brake bleed nipple Mark. Odd shape thing, the threaded section seems almost to be equal in diameter to the hex-head on it. 10mm flats head, and fairly soft metal, so rounded easily.

Have plugged the hole in the middle of it with an old drill bit to strengthen it and try to reduce the likelihood of it breaking, and think I can use a bit more force if I can get something that will grip properly.

You rate that spiral shape for locking on to hacked-about nuts/bolts ?

A good quality Vice grip with the drill bit in the hole and rock it ... tighten-loosen, to break the rust. Plus gas / Heat / freeze spray are other options to use.
Don't just go for more leverage as it's easy enough to shear the bleed nipple off and then you'll have to take the caliper off and drill out the nipple if you do.

Thanks Shaggy. Am on the plus-gas / heat treatment cycle. Think my vise grips are too large as I can't get the serrated teeth round the hex. Need a smaller set I suspect.

ah a seized bleed nipple! yeah thats going to break 99% would be my guess. you could try hammer a 9mm on it, or the set i posted, but i think your going to be fighting here with the thing twisting and breaking than anything else. that will mean caliper off and drill it out.

                  Any luck getting it out?

Still cycling the plus gas / hammer shock treatment. No joy yet.

Determined to persuade the damn thing out without breaking it. The back brake is actually ok on the bike, so no rush to do anything to fluidwise and it's perfectly rideable at the moment.

Next step I think is to source a replacement bleed-nipple, and if the current approaches don't work, get a steel punch or small cold chisel and apply a bit more 'persuasion'.

(I'd really hate to give the b@st@rd thing the pleasure of breaking on me at this stage though )
