  • Fuel pump, easy job.

So I went to pull out the fuel pump on my e30 as it had failed. It was fairly seized in place and needed a screwdriver between the send and return to get it to twist out. Chunk missing from my finger now!

Anyway. The rubber jacket on the pump itself had started braking up. About half of that is left in the tank along with the 'sock' filter which fell off. Is this going to be an issue and break the new pump or will it be grand? What would you do?

Drain the tank, be careful nothing sparks and clear out as much debris as possible, the fuel filter should be stopping most of it from getting through anyway.
I’m standing in a field full of sheep, is it wrong that I feel aroused?? 🤨🤪

Get as much of it out as you can, but so long as you fit a new gauze you'll be grand.

Sounds like a plan. Thinking i could hoover out the rubber bits once it's dry. But that also sounds like a way to make a dangerous grenade out of the nilfisk!

Do you know of a decent oil/fuel extractor? Have been thinking of getting one for the a6 daily. The undertray is a pig..

I have one of these for years for the odd oil change. I'm sure an electric one may be slightly quicker but it works fine and less to go wrong.

Welcome to borrow it if you happen to be near Dublin. SIts unused 99.9% of the time.

              Looks good, thanks.
Cheers for the offer too, but I'm over in the west.

Ah pity. But that would do the job for draining a tank of fuel no problem for you.

No use for the larger bits though.

I drove around for years with a sock filter floating around in my e30 tank before. I just fitted another sock to pump and away I went. Didn't really cause any issues . I was unlucky though that it fell outside of the little surge tank thingy. If it fell inside it, it would be easily removed with a long pliers or skinny hand

Ha ye mine floated agonisingly off to the side of the tank.

It's more the semi dissolved rubber I'm worried about, but I guess anything going through the new sock should go through the pump and into the fuel filter :/ No further I hope

New pump arrived today. When the vacuum ball arrives I'll see what I can get out draining the tank and try to forget about it!

I got the fuel pump in last weekend. The vacuum pump done a good job removing a good lot of the dissolved insulation 'dust'. I was also able to look inside and press the hose into the larger pieces to lift them out under vacuum.
Eventually the old sock came back into view and
that came out with the 12 inch long nose pliers. Hopefully it will start now!
Will tip down and get some fresh petrol over the weekend.
                        Thanks for all the pointers.
