  • The Daily Sheds

On the UK-based version of Backroads, there is plenty of forum topics around driving a ‘Shed’.

This translates to a car bought with nct for under €2k for daily driving. Usually includes diy maintenance etc. I enjoy reading through those topics and usually follow the shed criteria for my own daily drivers.

Anyone else enjoy driving a cheap daily that’s easy to work on?

Here’s my most recent shed. It’s a 318ci auto SE. Definitely the least desirable engine combo, but it only has 86k miles, and it’s original Irish car from new so no rust. Great cruiser, surprisingly good fuel economy. 5B28D213-D6DB-4DC7-8F59-32CF749FB96C.jpeg

I didnt buy this as my daily but due to an engine failure in my daily that will take 2 months at least to get sorted under warranty I'm daily driving including for my work an 2001 Audi TT 1.8T Quattro. and do you know what? its a breath of fresh air.... It has everything I need.... and nothing more..... comfy leather seats a 6 speed box so the motorway is painful and a 70L fuel tank.

This be her parked at the Convention center in Dublin last week

Now Id love to say its been trouble free 5000 miles so far but hey she 21 years old... currently awaiting on a Wastegate actuator to resolve boost issue. And just put a brake caliper on it today.... having a firm brake peddle is over rated

Lovely car! I had a BAM a good few years ago. The TT is coming into classic status, also getting tricky to find a clean one.

There’s always one or two jobs on the to do list running an older car!

I have nearly always had a “shed” by definition in my ten years of driving.

This year I have gone out and bought something newer (still not even that new!) but just found that there’s so little value to be had in the sub €5k bracket it wasn’t worth my while.

Yes, the sub 5k market used to have everything we needed in it pre-brexit, different story now. Although the odd good deal pops up now and again.

yea Im warming to it every day... but its not a clean one.... rust patches on the drivers door and wing..... in reality to make it look as well as it drives would require a repaint..... Interior is mint.....

I've spent a lot of the last 20 years driving at the sheddier end of the scale, maybe shed++ I generallty hang around with the 10 year olds.

for the last year I've been driving a 10-11 year old car that's like new. So I still look sheddy because of my reg and attitude towards car washing, but I'm sitting in leather in a car that at my current usage (20k km per annum) will not hit 100k miles until it's 15 or 16 years old.

You can’t beat heavily depreciated leather!

Last one I've had was a 2007 Pug 107 i bought (in 2020) for €320 that had been broken into, it had the ignition barrel smashed and was in generally poor condition. I got an ignition barrel from a breakers, gave it a full service, replaced a brake line and drum cylinder for NCT and she ran faultlessly for the 1.5years afterwards. 50+mpg, so easy to park and it pulled great handbrake turns due to the short wheelbase.

Sold it on as i had to buy a family car which my wife now uses and i got her car which is kinda a shed. Its a 2010 Ford Focus TDCI which she bought in 2014 with 60k km and it now has 220k km and plenty of dings/wear. I intend to drive it til it wont go no more.

Picked this shed (Suzie) up a few months ago after coming home from travelling and needing a run around . Brand new NCT, 4 new tyres, under €1.5k and it hasn't skipped a beat since ! Love it

My shed is actually I car I always fancied owning, a Hyundai Coupe FX2. Cost €400 extra when I traded in my previous shed a clapped out Suzuki Jimny. Always loved the looks of these and is a grand yoke as a daily.

Don't have a pic but it's the same as this..
