  • Mad/ Cool Jap Cars

The Jap makers have made some really cool and odd ball stuff that was only ever sold in Japan. Or in some cases limited to one or two other countries. But basically cars that we never got apart from when Jap imports started.

    Like the Jap only....

Toyota Corolla "Blade Master" of the 2000s.
One of the most boring looking Corolla models, and the Blade Master version doesn't look any more interesting or sporty. But it has a 3.5L V6 engine making 286bhp as standard!
How cool is that?! A near 300bhp boring looking sleeper from the factory.

We all stood around in a circle naked, thrusting our clinched fists in the air screaming "Jap Power!!"

    As a benchmark, in the 1990s a Porsche 911 made around 250bhp.

    The 1990s Nissan Pulsar GTI-R
Basically a Nissan Sunny to us, but with 230bhp SR20 turbo power and 4x4.

    Pulsar_05.jpg

    And it's little sister...

    The 1990s Nissan Pulsar VZ-R
200bhp from a 8,000 rpm screaming N/A 1.6 litre version of the SR

This thread could go for ages.. there's so much.

...but I'll start with one of my faves, the Autobacs/ASL Garaiya RS-01

Imagine if the Japanese equivalent of Halfords decided to make a Lotus Elise sort of sportscar with an extruded Aluminum chassis but as a coupe with scissor doors and a mid mounted Nissan SR20DE.. well you'd have this.

Woo I like that. Never seen nor heard of one of them before. Looks like Nissan Skyline wheels on it.

Yeah that's mine another backroader took the photo. Gone to greece now I had the OE side decals fitted after that pic.

It is a pretty crazy car all the same not many 1600cc N/A's were factory fitted with 8 injectors! I messed with that a lot I stoked it out to a 2 litre they sound pretty class too

Would you drive a Mitsuoka Buddy instead of a Rav4??

..by the way the Nissan Pulsar GTi-R was sold in the UK as the Sunny GTI-R, just not many people bought one over either a Delta Integrale or a Subaru Impreza 2000 Turbo.

                      Mazda eunos cosmo

and a raft of super cool kei cars...

                      Suzuki cappucino

                      autozam AZ-1

Among others... class high rev N/A fun.

One I was particularly fond of... The Glass Roof CR-X SiR

My sister in law had a flint grey one she bought off someone on here and it left a mark on me... brilliant infectious little thing! (I realise the one pictured has a sunroof)

Found a pic of the actual car after.

Even the manufacturers themselves haven't completely abandoned Nissan Figaro style retro whimsy, like the new Diahatsu Alto Lapin

Or the Honda N-One, which harks back to the old N360 with a touch of MK1 Civic

Speaking of which, the 1200CC MK1 Civic RS was never sold outside of Japan, it only had about the same power as maybe less or more depending on year as the 1500cc CVCC Civic that took the US by storm (but barely made a dent here, but I guess the competition was a lot less harder when you're up against AMC Gremlins, Chevy Chevettes and Ford Pintos rather than European small cars), but it got sportier suspension and is regarded as a bit more special.

The UK (and arguably by extension Ireland) got this car for about 2 years, with some being registered towards the end so they wouldn't need to meet newer European regulations and many even sat unsold for a while. Oh to have a time machine and £11,995 sterling...

It was the same story with the Nissan Sunny GTiR. Sold in Ireland also I believe. I remember reading that Nissan UK had to register all the ones they had before the 1992 emissions regs kicked in (did cats become mandatory in 1992 maybe?)
