  • Never have I ever.... owned a diesel

I'm generally behind the curve on everything anyway, so why wouldn't I be at the back of the National 2008 Drive a Diesel campaign queue!

It's not that I want a diesel particularly, or at all, but I do fancy an estate and I can't afford an RS6 or similar. And if you plug in estate (or anything) into donedeal 5 to 15 grand and filter for petrols, there's basically nothing. Crumbs from the table. Ancient stuff or sh1tty stuff. Whereas if you allow for diesel there's a sh1t-tonne of cars to choose from.

Course cos I haven't been paying attention I don't know anything about diesels really. So if take a 2 litre estate, I can get an older say 2010 higher mileage BMW *shudder* 520d, or a newer (2014 ish), lower mileage Skoda Superb for example, or a MUCH cheaper Peugeot 508 estate or Citroen equivalent.

Are the Frenchies a bag of crap? When it's a standard, functional, dumba$s 4 cyl diesel workhorse I see no point whatsoever in paying premium brand prices. No point sitting in first class and ordering egg 'n chips.

The superbs are awesome for the ol space it has to be said.

If anyone could be bothered to school me, then..... mine ears are thine.

Im 12 months into ownership of my first diesel. It's a low mileage, well spec'd Superb & its fine like. The Saab was calling for a tank a week, now the consumption has just about halved, so from that perspective its a vast improvement. Diesel is charmless but functional.

This might suit ya bloke, from the DD thread. And its not a nasty diesel:https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sal...etrol/33577979

So the purchase criteria is: estate, standard, functional, dumba$s 4 cyl diesel workhorse.

I'd likely go for a Mondeo.
Peugeots I have driven (with the 1.6 motor) I have found underpowered.

How about go full on mid-life family man and raise the stakes - to an MPV.
There is something appealing about all that space for carting around people and stuff.

It'd be nice if you could skip past this phase of Irish motoring

I had seen that alright. It's what I would prefer to be sure. It's a pity there aren't more to choose from. Also a mate was caught rotten last year with a 2 litre tfsi avant that turned out to be absolutely drinking oil. Kinda put me off them a bit.
There's some logic to a load lugger that I think in a way that they SHOULD really be diesel, in the same way that a petrol Nissan Navara would be silly. So a Superb diesel makes more sense really. You're not buying one for performance, you're buying for a purpose. That purpose for me is basically space for carrying bikes, not so much people, there's only 4 of us. We have posh bikes and I love the idea of them being in a boot that is closed.

Look, if this was a normal market then I wouldn't be asking this question at all and I'd just be taking my pic of a nice 2 litre turbo Volvo V70 or an E-class kompressor, or a Skoda vrs petrol estate. But none of those exist anymore except in a unicorn capacity and the first 2 are scuppered by silly 1200e pa motor tax rates after 08.

So it's diesel or shut your hole / gerrouda dat garden.

MPV wise - I'd plumb for a 2 litre petrol Mazda 5 or Ford equivalent, again if there any nice ones out there, but they're rare and I don't need multi-passenger carrying capability anyway.

I suppose the nicest thing you can say about diesel is that there's no rush to buy because at any stage you can go shopping and have many many cars to choose from that will fit the bill and do the job grand.

@42, I'd have thought your Duster would've been right up that street?

Duster was 1300kg towing capacity i think, similar to the alfa.

My current DD searches are including estates, suvs and mpvs....
I guess i have the l uxury of this being purely a utiilty vehicle, rather than a daily driver (as I dont drive anywhere now) and have a fun car.

I switched from a lovely smooth BMW petrol saloon to a diesel estate last year. To repeat Auto_Motive charmless but functional. And uses less juice.

The estate is handy though. Just yesterday, transporting a dog to the vet, dog bed in back of car, dog on bed, dog lead loosely attached to cargo anchor - and drive on. Same dog in the saloon was hopping around, up and down from floor to seat and generally slobbering everywhere.

For bike transport I would go MPV, bloke, if you really want practicality and don't care what you're driving. My brother had a Ford Galaxy for a while. He kept two of the separate back seats fitted and removed the middle seat and the third row. Result was acres of space in the very back and two comfy separate rear seats with armrests for passengers.

I'm in the same boat, thinking of next car from a GTI golf. Zero petrol's available. I looked a few weeks ago, got one hit for estate 2L P <15K, and was some random :D:D:D:D box,
had considered a VRS diesel estate but can't justify diesel at all as only have a 6K commute, with lot of stop start. and generally low mileage work otherwise.

did you consider a left hooker form the continent ?

Do you do enough mileage for a dieseasel?

I'd stay away from a 5 series estate if you want cheap motoring. They're long in the tooth and the 5 series has air rear suspension which commands big money when they fail and they do. Also the timing chain issue. Are they nice to drive and place to be....yes.

However I'd recommend a well specced ford s max for carrying bikes and big comfy yock. Especially if you want them locked in the boot.

Otherwise 3 series with them on the roof.

Buy a 2.0tdci if considering that route. my brother bought one new in 2018 and been perfect apart from having to replace a clutch.

Our 2011 520d cost us 5 grand in timing chain recently. They'll all need it at some point so only buy one that's had it done.

Other than that, Diesel is useless for our needs (mostly short urban driving), and the economy is consequently rubbish. It has no upside, except for the fact that there was nothing petrol available that was remotely suitable in our price range.

Just buy one of those VAG yokes. Who cares.
