Tyres landed so took the car into work today to have them fitted and store it while I service it etc. Minus 3⁰ coupled with 10yr old perished tyres that were like blocks of granite weren't the ideal combination this morning but did have a couple of laugh out loud moments I have to admit. 20230117_102521.jpg
Opted for maybe a unpopular choice uniroyal rainsport 5's but had decent reviews and got them at decent price so I'll see how I get on, ride and road noise is much improved but wouldn't be hard as old tyres were long past their sell by date.
Another job done on the lunch break and probably that best €100 I spent. Replaced the timing chain guide tensioner with a genuine one as the chain guides can break up due to chain slap and glad I did, old tensioner had very little movement in it so worthwhile.
Sh1t getting real now car hopefully in for sill tomorrow had it up on the ramp for a poke about. 20230119_131835.jpg
Part of the inner sill edge has a dose of the crumbles too so doing in to see if it can be done without removing the tank. If not it'll be back to the workshop to remove the tank and order tank straps, exhaust gaskets as it would be the perfect time for a mini refresh underneath.
A little worse than I thought but at least it will be done and done right. Washed the car to make myself feel better haha....... couldn't send a dirty car in for bodywork ( pet hate of mine)
You must be good buddies with a good bodyshop if you can get it in and seen to that quickly.
Hopefully it won't turn out to be too bad.
Let's see how good of buddies we are when I get the bill...... I had him half lined up when I decided to take the car so happy days. Once its back its back to the maintenance and then hopefully have a few bob to tax it haha.
that is.. crusty. I'm not expecting mine to be any better really. at least you are getting it sorted. Not easy to find somewhere to do it!
No not everyone wants the hassle. Hopefully be on the road sooner rather than later I'll post pictures as they come in. Asked him to take plenty so I can update the thread.
So bodyshop was confident he could do the repair with the tank in place but we agreed in the end it would be better to remove it as it would give more access and overall be a better job. Plan is now to do a mini refresh while it's out so ordering new tank straps, fuel lines and clips while it's down so that has escalated. Has anyone done similar refresh on the e39 platform?
Tank still in just been too busy but had time to stick it on the ramp and spray the bolts to get ready for removing exhaust etc. Removed the under guards and decided to remove as much loose metal to get a clearer picture....... warning looks dirty but silver lining was inner sill hasn't as much rot as I thought. 20230208_132912.jpg
Quite bad but as I have the new sill there doesnt bother me too much..... here's the pile of sill I was left with.
So rebooked for next week if i get the tank out over the weekend then i can start to move onto mechanical refresh etc...... the road might be slightly longer than expected but I'll have the volvo to keep me smiling if it doesn't sell.
Called in a favour in work and the lads removed the tank for me once i got lunch so worked out well. 20230215_135649.jpg 20230215_164524.jpg
Then off to the bodyshop for surgery
