Racing diffs had a sale on Black Friday, I’m not sure if I saved much but I had been wanting to upgrade the diff. I had previously put new clutches in it but it was just a standard lsd. For the 10 minutes I drove the car with the last engine it didn’t pass the hoonage test.

Some of mammys excellent cherry cake and tea and a look at the wares before going to the cold garage to start the job.

This kit includes two extra dog ear plates and two extra clutches to the standard setup. To account for the extra clutch thickness there is a new end cap which has less material than the original end cap. There’s some new Belleville washers and a new shim if any damage needs to be machined out.

The car was already in the air so the casing came out relatively easy

    Back cover off

The diff had previously had fresh oil and has no miles on it so I carefully removed the cage without loosing too much of the oil. Waste not want not.

With it on the bench it was just a case of belting some torx into the hex heads which I should have replaced last time round. Oops.

The racing diffs end plate I then realised didn’t come with a bearing. Balls. Should have noticed this earlier but was too busy eating cake.

Time to build it all back up and the bearing can be got during the week.

It’s all back together now anyway with new bearings. These went on very easily in a press and did the outer races in the bench vice.

Another job ticked off but no closer to starting it. I really need to finish off the fuel lines but motivation is low.

I dunno is it a good thing or a bad thing I didn't see that black Friday sale bought enough as it was. Get the engine running and the motivation will be straight back!

Sorry Conor, I’ve taken none of your advice

I pulled some black leather out of storage that i had been hoarding for whatever time corresponds to the thickness of mould on the seats.

I gave them a decent clean down with misc cleaner, fitted some cloth armrests and fired the whole lot in the car.

It looks fairly terrible but it’s functional.

All the bits to do the fuel lines arrived along with the bracket from an e39 to fit the fly by wire throttle. Another inch closer to completion I suppose.

Are you going to make up your own fuel lines or did you buy the pre formed BMW ones. My vent line is looking fairly crusty and the two full lines aren't much better, so it's on my list. Still not sure what route to go. I heard it can be awkward enough with the formed ones with the subframe in the way and as I'll be doing it on the ground I want to make it as easy as possible.

I bought the pre formed ones. They were not too expensive and it saves the fooling around bending them. I’m doing them on the ground too so will soon see if it’s actually possible or not.

I missed the Racing Diffs update. It is something that I'm hoping to do myself soon, just waiting for a little bit better of an exchange rate as it works out quite expensive with shipping.
I was hoping to not have to do the bearings but I guess it'd be foolish not to.

                So AMGE34

It will be a gigantic ballache to do the fuel lines. I have started it and definitely will need to drop the subframe to do it unless I want to bend the pre formed lines. If you can get away with just removing the vent line and touching up the other two I would as a interim solution.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D, I was going to order the preformed ones and all next week. There's no chance I'd be able to drop the subframe. Do you reckon you'd get away with out dropping the subframe if you were to make your own up? I might have to sub it out to a professional I'd say.

Seeing your previous work, dropping the subframe wouldn’t be a big job for you, disconnect the brake lines and shocks and most of the job is done… I definitely don’t have the interest right now and will probably wait until I have a lift in the shed. I’m a lazy cnut though. I’m not even sure you’d have to drop the subframe completely off the studs.

As I say though, I don’t have that motivation anymore but don’t go by me, I’m just a wast of time paper pusher. I haven’t earned a quid by lifting a spanner in 6 years.
